Low temperature deformation and fluid events redistribute 40Ar in white mica. Results were compared to each other and against complementary U—Pb zircon and monazite, and K-Ar fault gouge analysis. This result indicates that the step-wise release of Ar from white mica likely homogenizes and obscures spatially-controlled Ar isotope reservoirs in white mica from sheared rocks.
This study therefore suggests that laser ablation is the best method for dating the timing of deformation recorded by white mica. Final interpretation of results should be guided by microstructural analysis, estimation of deformation temperature, chemical characterization of white mica, and complementary chronometers. High strain deformation along the Wing Pond Shear Zone occurred between ca.
History of Newfoundland and Labrador Long settled by indigenous peoples of the Dorset culture , the island was visited by the Icelandic Viking Leif Eriksson in the 11th century, who called the new land ” Vinland “. L’Anse aux Meadows was a Norse settlement near the northernmost tip of Newfoundland Cape Norman , which has been dated to be approximately 1, years old. The site is considered the only undisputed evidence of Pre-Columbian contact between the Old and New Worlds, if the Norse- Inuit contact on Greenland is not counted.
Point Rosee , in southwest Newfoundland, was thought to be a second Norse site until excavations in and found no evidence of any Norse presence. The indigenous people on the island at the time of European settlement were the Beothuk , who spoke an Amerindian language of the same name. Later immigrants developed a variety of dialects associated with settlement on the island: Newfoundland English , Newfoundland French.
First inhabitants[ edit ] The first inhabitants of Newfoundland were the Paleo-Eskimo , who have no known link to other groups in Newfoundland history. Little is known about them beyond archeological evidence of early settlements. Evidence of successive cultures have been found. The Late Paleo-Eskimo, or Dorset culture , settled there about 4, years ago. They were descendants of migrations of ancient prehistoric peoples across the High Arctic thousands of years ago, after crossing from Siberia via the Bering land bridge.
The Dorset died off or abandoned the island prior to the arrival of the Norse.

After serving in Turkey during the Gallipoli Campaign, the Newfoundland Regiment was deployed to the Western Front, where it experienced its first baptism of fire on 1st July at Beaumont-Hamel. Upon a battlefield that had already seen extreme losses and death, the Newfoundlanders were called upon to join in the fight, but found themselves immediately caught under German machine gun fire.
Only 68 of the men who had gone into battle answered the roll call the next day. The Newfoundland Regiment had suffered one of the highest casualty rates of the 1st July , the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

The oldest one I have is from the s: Blue Star early s at the Duke of Duckworth, St. I dated it from the early s, near the end of the stubby era, because it was kept at the bar I figured they kept it as a novelty once stubbys became more rare. Three s Blue Star bottles, my collection. Continuing into the s we see that Blue Star, out of the stubby phase, is now into more common looking Newfoundland short necks. Which brings us to today. Its advertising focused on young beer drinkers and their lifestyles as students, partygoers, nightlife enthusiasts and so on — it was the Molson Canadian of Newfoundland.
It should be noted that while Black Horse was known to be local in origin, the advertising was seen by many to be an imitation of mainstream North American beer advertising. As a result, this gave Labatt an opportunity to reposition Blue Star as the true local brew, with a positioning statement for Blue Star best expressed as: Tactically, we wanted to be as different from Black Horse as possible:

Search What Is Online Dating? While these types of dating were great for their time, they have mostly been replaced with Internet dating, which works in a similar way but is much more effective and easier to do.

The oldest city in North America is famed for the colourful homes which make up the attractive streets of the city, yet just a few hours after arriving, it became clear there are plenty of surprises in store. I was based at the Murray Premises Hotel right on the harbour, a historic building, providing comfortable accommodation, which is well placed for exploring the city. Stepping out of the door on one side it was possible to stroll along the quayside, browsing the many small fishing vessels and a few larger ships, or leave through another door straight onto the high street to grab a coffee.
Becoming an honourary Newfoundlander is surprisingly easy, while not sounding particularly appealing. Along with reciting some Newfoundland phrases it involves downing some local rum, and cod smooching, yes you read right! A short drive along the coast and floating bergs of all shapes and sizes soon come into view, however an almost guaranteed way to see them is on a boat trip from the harbour. Seeing these beautiful, floating lumps of ice so close to shore is an experience not easily forgotten.
Traditional theories state the historical, colouring book like houses were painted so vibrantly to allow sailors at sea to distinguish them in fog. However, it seems more likely they were painted in this manner sometime in the s to inject life into the then declining town. Thankfully, it proved successful.

Etymology[ edit ] L’Anse aux Meadows is a French-English name which can be translated as the bay with the grasslands. Based on the idea that the Old Norse name ” Vinland “, mentioned in the Icelandic Sagas , meant “wine-land”, historians had long speculated that the region contained wild grapes. This dichotomy between the two views could have possibly been driven due to the two historic ways in which the first vowel sound of “Vinland” could be pronounced.
In , George Decker, a citizen of the small fishing hamlet of L’Anse aux Meadows, led Helge Ingstad to a group of mounds near the village that the locals called the “old Indian camp”. They investigated eight complete house sites and the remains of a ninth. Historians have speculated that there were other settlement sites, or at least Norse-Native American trade contacts, in the Canadian Arctic.
The archaeological excavation at L’Anse aux Meadows was conducted in the s by an international team led by archaeologist Anne Stine Ingstad under the direction of Parks Canada in the s. Following each period of excavation, the site was reburied to protect and conserve the cultural resources. The Norse settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows has been dated to approximately 1, years ago carbon dating estimate — CE , an assessment that tallies with the relative dating of artifact and structure types.
They are believed to have been constructed of sod placed over a wooden frame. Based on associated artifacts, the buildings were identified as dwellings or workshops.

History[ edit ] Harbour Grace was an important port and fishing centre from the earliest days of European exploration of North America and was a thriving seasonal fishing community by , with permanent settlement beginning in 24 years before the Jamestown, Virginia colony, often incorrectly cited as the first permanent European settlement in North America, and two years before the “lost” colony at Roanoke, North Carolina.
The first year-round settler that year was Robert Tossey of Dartmouth, England. In , pirate Peter Easton made Harbour Grace his headquarters, and established a fort overlooking the bay. Although it was attacked by the French the following year, the early settlement survived throughout the seventeenth century, with a permanent, year-round population numbering a few dozen, swelling to several hundred during the fishing season. Back in London at the end of this period in Hayman published a work of pithy epigrams called Quodlibets which he had written in Harbour Grace — it was the first book written in the new world.
