Aug 18, · Hey all, I’ve been looking everywhere, for a standard single dovetail 1-piece base that will fit my rifle. It’s a Winchester Model 70, in
This example has rounded blade shoulders, rather than the more commonly-encountered scalloped shoulders. Face flute measures 7. Socket length is 2. The M was the first breech loading military rifle produced in quantity and was the first rifled U. The M rifle was beautifully engineered and worked reasonably well. It was reliable and produced a vastly higher rate of fire than any musket of the period, all with the superior accuracy of a rifle.
That said, troops found firing the M unpleasant due to gas leakage around the breechblock. Although detrimental in many respects, gas leakage served to rid the action of powder fouling, enabling 20 or 30 shots before cleaning vs. However, the firer received the escaping gas in the face and downward toward their trigger hand, something most could simply not get used to. As a consequence, M rifles mostly sat in storage. The lock, breechblock, and trigger were a single, easily-removable assembly that could be loaded and fired kind of a makeshift pocket pistol.

Design[ edit ] The Model was the first Winchester rifle to feature a box magazine located underneath the action instead of the tubular magazine design, which had remained fundamentally unchanged from the Winchester This allowed the rifle to safely chamber military and hunting cartridges with spitzer pointed bullets. The M was also the last of the lever-action rifles to be designed by John Browning , and featured a rear locking bolt as in his previous designs dating back to the Winchester The M is the strongest lever-action rifle Winchester has produced, designed to handle the increased pressures generated by the more powerful smokeless powder cartridges entering common use at the time of its introduction.
By serial number , it is thought that the last of the flat sided M s left the factory.

Paperback Verified Purchase It was a very good buy for the money, and made a very good gift for some one who is interested in collecting any specific type of Winchester Model 70 rifles. These books are collector books themselves, even when printed new, and the used book market for them keeps going up. I think that the book is the very best one on Winchester Model 70 rifles, and any Winchester Model 70 collector needs one if wanting to be serious about collecting them.
I went too long before getting one for myself. After I got mine, and had not even finished reading it, when I knew that my collector friend needed one, even more than I did. He had told me several times before that he did not need this book at all since he already knew every thing he needed to know about Model 70s. After receiving this gift, and after he just started to skim through it, he called me to tell me how much he liked it, and that he had already learned much more than he already knew.
He told me that it had already given him a lot better idea what each Model 70 in his collection is worth, and what to lookout for in rare Pre 64 Model 70s that are up for sale, that have might have been changed to increase their value. He told me that he would never part with this book as long as he continues to collect Pre 64 Model 70s, and I sure won’t ever part with the one I now own.

The Model 54 was really sort of a primitive Model 70, or the Model 70 is a refined Model Getting the Range The stock on the Model 70 Winchester—successor to the old Model 54—has good fore-ends, satisfactory drop at comb and butt, and a good, wide, flat butt plate. One not particularly large joint with which I am familiar has a waiting list for about Winchester Model 70s in. These arms never appear on the shelves at all.
A bad bottleneck which has developed in the production of better-grade guns is the shortage of men able to checker gun stocks. During the war there was no demand for practitioners of this high art. Many went into other lines of work. No flies on the Model 70! Now, chaps with varicose veins and fallen arches find lugging standard Model 70s over hill and dale a bit burdensome. Once at the factory a hired hand drew me aside and was about to spill the dope. He glanced furtively about, his eyes rolling in fear.
