Did you know that our brain is actually programmed to see in borders?! The amazing Debbie Diller talks about this, too. I created these word wall header cards for these sweet teachers to use in their rooms…just click on the pic to download some for your classroom , too! Research shows that the uniformity helps our kids to process and retain information and the solid background colors that serve as a base for your word walls cut out any additional visual distractions. I think minimal distractions are so important for our emergent readers! Each one of my babies gets one at the beginning of the year and then they add to it as the year goes on. You can use vis a vis markers to add words as the year progresses and if the word walls are still in good condition at the end of the year you can save them and reuse them next year, too! I have a student information binder I keep next to my computer. I file these information sheets inside that student binder along with many other things!!! Next up on the checklist….

My biggest first day…uh, first week…fear is losing a child due to transportation confusion. A phone call home really helps to put my mind at ease. I like keeping the transportation arrangements on a pocket chart because it helps me…and the kids..

This match activity is a great way to engage kids and make them experts on this topic. See more Place Value Place value is an important fundamental mathematical concept that kids need to learn.

Help kids understand this property of numbers with place value worksheets for kids! Place Value Worksheets for Kids Digits take on different values based on their place and position in a number. While most of us understand and take for granted that the value of 5 in is not the same as its value in , kids might take longer to grasp this.

Place value plays an important role especially when kids learn about decimal numbers. Parents can talk about place value casually at home to help familiarize kids with it. Worksheets on place value are an effective way to get kids to practice this concept.

Cut various colors of tissue paper into squares or triangles. I had my daughter cut over a bowl to contain the tissue paper. Use a silver or gold crayon to color in the top of the Christmas lights. If you have kids who dislike sticky textures, using popsicle sticks instead of fingers is a good option. Before the glue dries, sprinkle loose white Elmers glitter over the tissue paper to give the Christmas light a little shine and texture.

Make sure to have long low containers or open file folders underneath the projects to catch the glitter as the kids are working.

Friday, April 13, Making Words I have had a few emails on my making words lessons, and have sold a few on on TpT, but when my son came home with this: He really enjoyed it even though I think he was supposed to write an for number 5, but whatevs. What is making words? Making words is a hands-on approach using letter manipulatives so students can see how words are formed and spelled.

I know with some making word activities, they give you a set of letters. You build 2 letter words, 3 letter words, and so forth.

The centers are: Writing Activity, 2 practice reading(one for guided readers they have been using in group and one for free choice or AR), a listening center with about 40 taped books available, working with words center and an optional activity center for theme, MAth, Sci,SS, or computers.

Christmas Addition and Subtraction Math Mats This post contains affiliate links for your convenience. View our full disclosure policy here. Your students will enjoy solving equations by decorating these addition and subtraction math mats with red and green math manipulatives. You can use them in your homeschool or traditional classroom. I like to put them in my math center.

You could also use them in small groups or send them home for students to use at home for extra practice. Supplies To get started, first gather your materials. It also makes this activity more effective when the children can use dry erase markers to write in the math equations. I grabbed a variety of Christmas themed counters as my math manipulatives at the dollar store — you may be able to find some fun things there as well! Addition Students will start by rolling one die and then writing the number in the first box of the equation at the bottom of the addition math mat printable.

They will then build their equation with math manipulatives that match the corresponding number. Students will roll a second die, or the same die twice, to find the second number in the addition math equation.

Bossy R Worksheets

We celebrated Earth Day throughout the week and went on a field trip to the zoo. Our trip to the zoo started with a bus tour to get a snapshot of what we wanted to see. We were able to see more animals than ever before, because they were out due to the overcast weather. Some of our favorite zoo animals: The male lion was one of the first animals we saw.

1st Grade Worksheets JumpStart’s extensive collection of fun, printable worksheets for first graders is perfect for 6 and 7 year old children. Parents and teachers can use these free worksheets to help kids master skills like phonetics, reading, time, money and addition.

But the problem with games is that they often require quite a bit of prep work for us teachers. Have students stand at their desks and write a two-digit if doing tens and ones or three-digit number if doing ones, tens, and hundreds on a sheet of paper. It works with larger numbers for older students as well. Start calling out different place value amounts one at a time. If a student has that amount in their number, they have to sit down. You may choose to call on students who sit down to share their number aloud.

Keep calling out different place value amounts until only one student is left standing. Have them share their number with the entire class. That is the last number standing! Place Value War This is a fun two player game that is perfect for centers. It requires a deck of playing cards or UNO cards. If using a deck of playing cards, leave the Joker cards but remove the jacks, queens, kings, and aces.

Students turn over two cards from the deck if they are working with ones and tens, and three cards if doing ones, tens, and hundreds. Again, larger numbers work for older students as well.
